Ways to track DHL Express

How to track your DHL Express shipment

  1. Find your 10-digit DHL Express waybill or AWB number. It is printed on the receipt, the shipping label, or in the booking email or message.
  2. Type that number into the tracking box at the top of this page. If a seller booked it, you can use the order or reference number instead.
  3. Press track to see where your shipment has reached and its latest delivery status.

DHL Express tracking number format

A DHL Express tracking number is what DHL calls the waybill or air waybill (AWB) number. It is a 10-digit code made up only of numbers, with no letters in it, for example 1234567890. If a business account booked your shipment, you may instead have a shipper's reference or order number, and DHL Express courier tracking works with either one. A number longer than 10 digits usually belongs to DHL eCommerce, not DHL Express.

Overview

About DHL Express

DHL Express carries documents and parcels between countries, and it ranks among the biggest firms in the world doing that job. The beginning dates to 1969. Three friends in San Francisco, Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom and Robert Lynn, hit on the idea of flying the shipping paperwork ahead of the cargo, so the goods could clear faster once they landed. The company took its name from their three surnames. India came into the picture in 1979, with the country base set up in Mumbai, so the firm has been moving things in and out of the country for a long stretch now. Today it belongs to DHL Group, with its home in Bonn, Germany, and its network covers more than 220 countries and territories.

Most people landing on this page are keeping an eye on a parcel going abroad, or one heading into India from somewhere overseas. Each DHL Express shipment is tied to a waybill number. Some call it the air waybill, others just say AWB. It runs to 10 digits, all numbers, with no letters thrown in. Got yours in front of you? Type it into the field at the top of the page and it will pull up where things stand. After that you can usually trace the main steps, starting at pickup, then the legs between sorting hubs, then customs, and finally the drop-off. Here is something to look out for. If your code goes beyond 10 digits, the odds are it belongs to DHL eCommerce, which works a touch differently.

A handful of small pointers can take the edge off the wait. With a fresh booking, the very first scan will not appear straight away, so leave it a few hours before the tracking starts to move along. Tuck your receipt or booking slip somewhere safe as well. The waybill number is printed there, and you will want it close by. Now and again customs may sit on a parcel for a spell, and DHL usually gets in touch with the receiver if a document or a duty payment is still owed. Has your shipment stayed put longer than seems right? The easiest move is to call DHL's India helpline on 1800 30 345. That line is open round the clock, day and night.

Why DHL Express?

From a 1969 San Francisco start-up to the world's largest cross-border express network.

DHL was born in 1969 in San Francisco, when three friends — Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom and Robert Lynn — started flying shipping documents ahead of the cargo so the paperwork cleared customs before the freight arrived. The company name is simply their three surnames: Dalsey, Hillblom and Lynn. That courier-by-air idea grew into a worldwide network, and in the early 2000s Germany's Deutsche Post bought DHL outright. Today DHL is the express arm of Bonn-based DHL Group, the biggest logistics company in the world.

  1. 1969

    The three founders

Dalsey, Hillblom and Lynn launch DHL in San Francisco, hand-carrying documents by plane between the US mainland and Honolulu so they clear customs ahead of the ships.

  2. 1979

    DHL reaches India

DHL begins international express operations in India — among the first global couriers to do so — building its India base in Mumbai.

  3. 2002

    Part of Deutsche Post

Germany's Deutsche Post completes its takeover of DHL, folding the yellow-and-red brand into what grows into DHL Group.

  4. 2005

    A foothold in India

DHL takes a controlling stake in Blue Dart, India's premier domestic air-express carrier, so DHL customers can reach 56,400+ locations inside the country.

  5. Today

    Across 220+ countries

DHL Group runs a workforce of around 580,000 people and connects more than 220 countries and territories — more than any other delivery company on earth.

Whether your parcel is an urgent export document on Express Worldwide or an inbound e-commerce order clearing Indian customs, every DHL Express shipment carries that 10-digit waybill number — and you can follow it, from pickup right to your door, in the box above.

How your DHL Express shipment reaches you

  1. 1

    Booking and pickup

You book the shipment and DHL Express picks it up from your door, and a docket or AWB number is made that stays with the parcel for the whole trip.

  2. 2

    Scanned into the network

At the first stop the parcel gets its first scan, which is how the system knows it has entered the network and starts keeping a record of where it goes.

  3. 3

    Sorted at the hub

Staff at the origin hub read the address and sort it onto the right route, putting it together with other parcels heading the same way.

  4. 4

    Carried between cities

Now the long part begins, as your parcel moves between city hubs by road or air, slowly getting closer to the town near your address.

  5. 5

    Reaches your local hub

Once it lands at the hub closest to you it is marked out for delivery, and this is usually where DHL Express courier tracking shows it is nearly at your door.

  6. 6

    Delivered to you

A delivery rider brings it round, you take it in, and the status flips to delivered so both you and the sender can see it reached you safely.

Reference

DHL Express tracking status meanings

Shipment picked up
DHL has collected the parcel from the sender and entered it into its network; the waybill number is now live and the journey starts here.
Processed at DHL Facility
The shipment has been scanned and sorted at a DHL service centre or gateway and is being lined up for the next leg of its trip.
Departed Facility
The parcel has left a DHL facility — often the origin gateway or an international hub — and is moving toward the destination country by air or road.
Clearance processing
Your shipment is going through customs. DHL handles most of this automatically, though duties, taxes or extra paperwork can hold it briefly.
Shipment on hold
Something is needed before the parcel can move on — a customs document, a duty payment, or a delivery detail. DHL usually contacts the receiver when this happens.
Arrived at DHL Facility
The parcel has reached the DHL facility nearest the delivery address and is being prepared for the final leg.
With delivery courier
A DHL courier has the parcel on the vehicle and is bringing it to your address, usually the same day.
Delivery attempted
DHL tried to deliver but could not complete it — the address was locked, incomplete or no one was available — and a re-attempt normally follows on the next working day.
Delivered
The shipment has been handed over at the destination; the scan records the date, time and who signed for it.

DHL Express delivery time estimates

How long a shipment takes with DHL Express depends mostly on where it is going and the service you pick. The day ranges below are typical for booked, in-transit parcels, not fixed promises.

RouteTypical delivery time
Within the same city (pickup and drop in one metro)1 to 2 working days
Metro to metro across India (say Mumbai to Delhi)1 to 3 working days
Into a smaller town or rural PIN code3 to 5 working days, sometimes a touch more
India to a nearby country or major overseas business hub2 to 4 working days, once customs is clear
India to a far or remote international address4 to 7 working days, plus any customs hold

These are estimates only and can shift with the service you choose, the actual distance, customs checks on cross-border parcels, and the extra load couriers carry during festival and holiday seasons. For a firm date, ask the booking branch.

What affects DHL Express charges?

The price for a DHL Express shipment is not one fixed amount. It is worked out per parcel, so the honest answer is to weigh and measure your item, then ask the branch for a current quote. The DHL Express courier tracking page is for following a booked shipment, not for live rates, so the counter staff are the people to give you the figure.

FactorHow it affects the price
Weight, actual versus volumetricYou are charged on whichever is higher, the real weight on the scale or the size-based volumetric weight. A big, light box can cost more than a small, heavy one.
Distance and zoneA parcel to the next city costs less than one to a far state or another country. Cross-border parcels sit in the higher international zones.
Service speedStandard surface or economy is the cheaper option. Time-definite express and air, like next-day or before-noon delivery, costs more.
Document or parcelA light envelope of papers is usually billed lower than a packed parcel of goods, which also brings size and weight into play.
Add-onsExtras such as cash on delivery, transit insurance for the declared value, and proper packing each add to the bill. Customs duty and tax on overseas parcels are separate again.

Rates change from branch to branch and over time, and customs charges on international parcels are set by the authorities, not the courier. This is a plain guide to what moves the price, not an official price list, so always confirm the exact, current amount with the branch before you book.

Common tracking problems

Tracking number not showing after booking
Just booked? Give it a few hours. The docket or AWB number needs a little time to register in the system before anything shows up. If it's still blank the next day, ring the booking branch and confirm the number you've got is right.
Number not being recognised at all
Check each digit slowly. One wrong number and it won't match. And make sure you're using the actual AWB or docket number, not an order or reference number the seller sent you. Those two get mixed up all the time.
Status hasn't moved for days
A quiet patch happens, especially on long routes or during a busy spell. The parcel is usually still moving even when the scans go silent. But if there's been no change for several days, call DHL Express customer care and ask them to check.
Says delivered but I have nothing
Ask around first. Family, a neighbour, your watchman, the building reception. Parcels often get left with one of them. Have a look near your door too. Still nothing? Contact the booking branch with your docket number so they can trace where it went.
Out for delivery but no one came
It happens. Sometimes the courier can't find you, or the door gets missed. Usually the status picks up an attempt note. Keep your phone close by, and if things go quiet, call customer care to set up another try or arrange a pickup.
Where do I find my tracking number?
If a shop booked it for you, the number is sitting in their order confirmation, an SMS, or an email. Just ask them directly for the DHL Express courier tracking number or the AWB, and they can pass on the receipt details too.
